Slim Down Your Holiday Feast
The countdown to Thanksgiving is upon us. In less than four weeks we will all sit down with friends and family to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving Feast. But wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy the same wonderful meal with fewer calories? How about 21 ways to slim down the feast? At SparklePeople.com we found some great tips on lowering the calories of your favorite holiday recipes.
For starters, did you know that by removing the skin of your turkey, you can save yourself 15-20 calories and 2 to 3 grams of fat per serving? Yes, it is really that easy. Basting the bird with low-sodium chicken broth or white wine can also cut fat and calories. Another secret tip is to let your bird rest for 30 minutes before carving. By allowing the bird to rest you will serve a moister bird that will require less gravy, which can be extremely fatty and greasy.
Ahh the mashed potatoes. We all love them, but did you know each serving can have up to 220 calories and 8 grams of fat in a one cup serving? How can that be? To reduce the calories of this favorite side, try heating skim milk instead of whole milk with herbs and only add enough to thin the potatoes. Also use low-fat or even fat-free sour cream, cream cheese of yogurt to add a creamy mixture to your potatoes.
Stuffing. Just the word sounds fattening. However you can lower the calories in your stuffing by switching to low-sodium chicken broth for most of the butter. By doing this one simple step, you can save up to 50 calories per serving!
