Remembering Those Who Have Served Our Country
On Monday many of us will enjoy a holiday from work, including all of the employees at Fontis Water. However, it’s important to remember the reason we will all enjoy the day off. Memorial Day is a US federal holiday where we take the time to remember those men and women who died while serving in the US Armed Forces. The holiday is celebrated on the last Monday of May every year, and it was originally called Decoration Day. Decoration Day was started after the Civil War and served as a day to remember the Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in battle.
On Memorial Day many will pay tribute to these heroes in very special ways. There will be parades and festivals, and volunteers across the country will place American flags on graves at our national cemeteries. The Atlanta Journal and Constitution has a great listing of weekend activities for all ages.
Many businesses will also offer specials for military personnel and their family members. Stone Mountain Park will not only be hosting a number of special Memorial Day events, but all active and retired military personnel will receive one Free Adventure Pass with a valid ID. They will also save up to $10 off per person for immediate family members and 20% off food and merchandise. Visit their website for more details.
In Marietta on Saturday, May 24, the annual Memorial Flag Day placement will take place at the Marietta National Cemetery. Complete event details can be found on the Foothills District site. This is a great event for young and old. However, no matter what you are doing we hope you all have a wonderful day and remember those who died so that we may all enjoy our freedom. Happy Memorial Day!
